Smithsonian’s “Year of Music” Museum Day Celebration

Saturday, September 21, 2019 (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)

Discover, learn, listen, and create! Search for musically inspired artifacts and artworks while exploring the museum galleries with a scavenger hunt specifically designed for Museum Day’s 2019 theme: Smithsonian Year of Music. Learn about and listen to vintage instruments during several gilded age music room demonstrations. After the scavenger hunt and music demonstrations, come to the Mezzanine level overlooking the former Alcazar Hotel’s historic pool area to create your own music-themed craft. You’ll also want to explore our museum store where we have exciting musically inspired items.

Join the Lightner Museum and Smithsonian Magazine in celebrating “A Year of Music.” Museum Day’s annual celebration of boundless curiosity provides free admission for two people with Smithsonian Museum Day tickets. Participants are allowed to download one ticket per email address. The ticket provides free general admission for two on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

Migrating Birds of North Florida

Migrating Birds of North Florida

Thursday September 19 – 6:30PM

Fall bird migration is upon us! Join Master Naturalist Gary Whiting and Expert Birder Cathy Murphy at Wild Birds Unlimited in Fruit Cove for a look at many common (and not so common) migrating bird species. Because Northeast Florida is a “flyway” for migration, we often enjoy many seasonal avian visitors from fall through spring. Learn how many species journey thousands of miles, some from the Arctic to the tip of South America.  You’ll enjoy stunning photos, amusing anecdotes, and interesting facts about how you can observe and attract many of these migrators to your own back yard.

Space will be limited to the first 45 responses. Email or call (904) 230-3242 to reserve your seat. Presentation will be at Wild Birds Unlimited, 450 State Rd 13 North, Suite 108, St Johns, FL 32259. That’s next to Publix in the Julington Village Shopping Center.
