Get to Know … Melissa Nelson

Melissa Nelson is a Northeast Florida native who grew up on beautiful Amelia Island. She earned her degree in Public Relations from the University of Florida and has spent the majority of her career in the non-profit setting. After working with the Chamber of Commerce and other associations, she became a stay at home mom of twins, McKenna and Max. Family first, Nelson enjoyed 15 years of volunteering in areas where her children were involved. A former soccer coach, PTO member, and booster board member, Nelson transitioned back into the workforce in 2014, just three years ago.

Originally from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Brian Quirk moved to Jacksonville 30 years ago to start a new business venture. He is a graduate of Florida State University, the University of North Florida and he obtained his M.B.A from Webster University. Spending much of his career in education positions at the University of Phoenix and ITT Technical Institute, Quirk currently serves as executive director of City College, a nonprofit institution of higher learning.

Twin Lakes Academy Elementary recently honored teacher Marcia Rivas for her many contributions to the school including forming the school’s award winning Green Team in 2009. The Green Team encourages kids to be educated and aware of the environment and is made up of fourth graders who have a growing passion for their environment.

Get to Know … Yana Weaver

Growing up in a small town near Tula, Russia, Yana Weaver always had a profound love for music and a vast interest in American culture. A longtime music student trained by world renowned professionals, Weaver attended nine years of music school before going to college and earning a degree in both music and Russian Philology, which prepares students for the art of teaching. As a young student, a former teacher’s love for the English language gave encouragement to Weaver in pursuing her own endeavors in speaking fluent English.

When Ponte Vedra Beach resident Vickie Cavey was approached about participating in Jacksonville’s annual Dancing with the Stars (DWTS), her immediate response was an excited and emphatic “yes.” After retiring from JEA following 32 years of employment, Cavey was excited to help the event that benefits Jacksonville Children’s Chorus in any way possible — especially if it included dancing, one of her favorite activities.
