An article about rats was in the Nov. 11, 2016 edition of The New York Times on page A12, a research piece by James Gorman that jumped out at me. It was titled, “When Tickled, Rats Giggle and Leap, Researchers Find.” It was accompanied by a photograph of a researcher in Berlin, scratching the belly of a rat, with the rat’s head leaning against the researcher’s hand.

Now that the holiday shopping frenzy has passed, here’s something to do with your time: take yourself to Chamblin Bookmine, 4551 Roosevelt Blvd. in Jacksonville. Check the website for hours, or call (904) 384-1685. They might have a book or two that will appeal. In fact there might be two million books that might interest you, in that store alone. Another store, Chamblin’s Uptown, at 215 North Laura Street is smaller, less overwhelming and has a cafe. There are three Chamblins in all, with books totaling three million, if you include the warehouse on Forest Street, which you can visit by appointment.

It’s almost 2017 and perhaps this is a good time to give kids and grandkids some “words to live by.” What good are we if we don’t convey a thing or two to the future generation? So here is a random list which, if I ever thought they might listen, I would tell them. And it could be useful for you as well.
