Life Scout Jason Herren of Troop 280 completed his Eagle Scout project by organizing a basic needs drive for Port In The Storm Homeless Youth Shelter.

Herren was motivated to help after learning St. Johns County has more than 200 homeless youth attending county schools, with only one shelter assisting both male and female youth ages 18-24.

“Jason learned that one person can make a difference in the lives of others,” said a recent release.

Herren led scouts from Troop 280 and Troop 9280 in collecting food, hygiene items, underwear and gift cards for the shelter. The scouts also prepared approximately 65 lunches consisting of deli meat sandwiches, fruit, chips and Gatorade to address food insecurity.

The neighborhood Walmart in Fruit Cove donated a gift card used to purchase lunch items. Coastal Postal in Fruit Cove assisted with printing flyers for the drive.

The project brought awareness to local homelessness while allowing Herren to demonstrate Scout principles through community service.

Port In The Storm is the county’s only shelter serving homeless youth in the 18-24 age range. Information about the organization is available at stfrancisshelter.org/programs/port-in-the-storm, along with ways to support their mission to move youth beyond the streets.
