Fall for football food

With September quickly passing by comes the season we all seem to enjoy: fall. There is so much to endure during these fun months, especially football. A time for family, friends and food — and what would football be without the food?

While pizza is always a popular choice when watching the game, it doesn’t always have to be delivered or store bought. Take it up a notch and put a twist on it with your own creation. No stretching the dough and tossing into the air required.

A favorite we enjoy on football days is a take on French bread pizza. Instead of using traditional French bread, we opt for Cuban bread. Our kids absolutely love making this. It is super simple and fun. While not everyone may fancy the same toppings, this is a different and easy way to enjoy pizza just the way you like it. And the kids end up making their own dinner (with guidance of course), so it is a win-win for everyone.

Cuban Bread Pizza

Pizza sauce:

Small can tomato paste

15 oz. can tomato sauce

½ sweet diced onion

Clove of chopped garlic

Handful chopped basil

2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil

Salt and Pepper

Cuban bread:

16 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese

16 oz. fresh whole milk mozzarella

Pepperoni

Black olives

Peppers

Basil

For pizza sauce, pour two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil into a pot and turn on medium low heat. Once up to temperature, add diced onions and simmer for three minutes. Add chopped garlic and simmer for one minute. Add tomato sauce and paste and stir. Once the sauce starts to bubble, turn heat down to low. Add chopped basil, a pinch of salt and pepper, and let simmer for 30 minutes.

Section the Cuban bread into three parts, then bisect in half. Add pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella and your favorite toppings. Halfway in between topping, add fresh whole milk mozzarella for a cheesier taste. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 – 12 minutes.
