Q: Can you give an update on the Town Hall meeting held on Nov. 14 at Mandarin High School?
A: This town hall meeting was held to discuss school safety. I’d like to thank all the parents who attended. Principal Kniseley led the meeting and shared information about new systems in place at Mandarin High School as well as listened to parent concerns. The school’s assistant principals were present as was district leadership, including Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene and Officer Clarke. If you missed the meeting, I encourage you to contact Principal Kniseley.
Did you know that the state of Florida has an app called Fortify FL? This app allows for reporting of threats. Download the app or visit the school district website to learn more

Q: What is the latest school legislation?
A: On Nov. 13, I was in Tallahassee and met with State Representatives Yarborough and Daniels, as well as Senators Bean, Gibson and Farmer to discus teacher pay, school safety and learn about upcoming bills regarding education. I also had the opportunity to talk with Lt. Governor Nuñez and Senator Bradley. Decisions made in Tallahassee have a great impact on local education.

Q: Has the date been set for the School Choice Expo?
A: Believe it or not, it’s not too soon to begin thinking about school choice options. The School Choice Expo will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. All neighborhood, magnet, and charter schools will be represented under one roof so parents can get full information to help make the right choice for their student.

Q: Do you have anything else to share about about District 7?
A: I have a couple of shout outs. First, to the Mandarin Middle School football team, which advanced to the city championship game to be played on Nov. 20 versus Stilwell Military Academy. Second, to the Atlantic Coast High School marching band, which earned straight “Excellents” at the recent Florida Bandmasters Association MPA adjudication.

Finally, I’d like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season. The last day of school is Dec. 19, 2019 before the winter break. School resumes on Jan. 7, 2020.
