Q: Do you have an update on the district’s mask policy?

A: The mask mandate will remain in place for the rest of this school year; however, the goal, pending any unforeseen circumstances, is to begin the upcoming school year as close to “normal” as possible. I anticipate masks to be optional next year, pending any unforeseen circumstances.

Q: Can you give an update on the Teacher of the Year?
A: Jim Schmitt, Duval County Teacher of the Year from Mandarin High School, was selected as one of five finalists for the State of Florida Teacher of the Year. Education Chancellor Jacob Oliva was present at Mandarin High School to announce this good news.

Q: Are there any opportunities for local businesses to support Mandarin schools?
A: We have several schools in District 7 that are looking for community partners. If you or your company would like to be connected with a school in District 7, which includes Mandarin, please let me know. Right now there are specific needs for partnerships for campus beautification as well as sponsorship for a school app.

Also, I’d like to say “Thank you” to READ USA for hosting a book fair at all elementary schools in District 7 during May. Each student got to select three books.

Q: What are your thoughts on the upcoming end to this school year?
A: The last day of school is June 3. I’d like to say “Congratulations!” to all graduates from the Class of 2021. Thank you to all principals, teachers, staff, parents and students for making this school year a success. I hope everyone enjoys their summer! Keep reading!

Q: How can our readers contact you?

A: They can email me at HersheyL@duvalschools.org or call me at (904) 316-3609.
