Free registration is now open for special needs baseball for local youth. The Field of Dreams is a specially designed turf baseball field that allows children with mental or physical disabilities living in or near St. Johns County the opportunity to play baseball, to wear a uniform and play as a member of a team.
Field of Dreams baseball has grown from four teams in 2011 to 10 teams and over 140 children with special needs in 2015 — and more growth is anticipated in 2016. Any child with special needs from ages five to 18 or up to age 21, if he or she is still in high school, is eligible to play.
Opening Day is Saturday, Feb. 6. Games will be held each Saturday until April 21 (except March 19 and 26 for Spring Break). To have a uniform for Opening Day, registration must be completed by Jan. 8, although new registrations continue to be accepted throughout the season.
Funding for Field of Dreams is solely through public contributions, team sponsors and league sponsorship donations. Donations and contributions are always welcome. Â
Field of Dreams is in need of additional volunteer support to run the league this season and next. Please contact them via their website, www.fodbaseball.com if you are interested in volunteering or donating.
The Field of Dreams is located at Aberdeen Park, 1401 Shetland Dr. in St. Johns.
