The Friends of the GTM Reserve will celebrate #GivingTuesday on Nov. 29 with an oyster shell bagging event at GTM Research Reserve. This day of giving is fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. A global event, it harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners-charities, families, businesses, and individuals to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.
“The oyster shell bagging event is an opportunity for members of the community to be a part of what the reserve is doing,” said Debbi Magri, president of Friends of the GTM Reserve Board of Directors. “These oyster shells will be used for the GTM Research Reserve’s oyster reef building projects.”
#GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, with this year falling on Nov. 29. This event kicks off the holiday giving season and will hopefully inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities and to give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support. Currently, more than 45,000 corporate and nonprofit organizations in over 71 countries have participated in the initiative.
“We hope that event participants will discover all the different resources available at GTM Research Reserve and want to come back to enjoy the recreational activities, get involved as a volunteer with some of the education and research projects, or decide to become a member of Friends,” said Ellen Leroy-Reed, executive director of Friends of the GTM Reserve.
The oyster shell bagging will be held at GTM Research Reserve Middle Beach Access Lot, 2000 S. Ponte Vedra Blvd., 9 a.m. — 1 p.m., Nov. 29. Bring a water bottle, wear closed toe shoes and dress for the weather. Gloves will be provided. The public is invited to come anytime during the day and work as little or as much as possible.
