Coming off an unseasonably warm December weekend with blue skies and holiday spirit filling the Beaches area, organizers of Deck the Chairs announced an estimated 150 percent increase in visitors to date for the month-long display with more than 3,000 attending Night of Music and Dance. Deck the Chairs is an annual lighted sculptural exhibit using the iconic red chairs of The American Red Cross Life Saving Corps.
Night of Music and Dance showcased four community dance troupes, choirs supported by B.R.A.S.S. and featured an awards presentation for chair decorating to close out the evening. Six chairs were recognized with Beaches Episcopal School earning “Best of Show.” Awards also went to Ponte Vedra Rotary Club, In the Pink, Beaches Car Wash, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, and Four Points by Sheraton.
Preceding the full night of Sunday programming was a weekend of daytime activities kicked off by Players By The Sea young performers, kids fun zone, concession sales and food trucks. Night time remains the big draw with recent Saturday and Sunday attendance surpassing 5,000.
Deck the Chairs continues throughout December with the final full day of lights on January 2, 2016. Free and open to the public, the light display aims to build community pride, foster private and public relationships and provide a wholesome and festive downtown during the holidays. All net proceeds from Deck the Chairs will benefit the historic Jacksonville Beach Life Saving Corps. To learn more, visit www.deckthechairs.org
