March 4, the I Did A Hike.  This is the primary annual fundraiser for the Florida Trail Association (a non-profit). The registration fee is $20.  All proceeds go to supporting the Florida Trail. This year's hike is fairly close by -- along the Suwanee River, near White Springs, FL.  There are three potential hike lengths -- 3, 5 and 8 1/2 miles.  The route is very picturesque, paralleling the Suwanee River in many places. Registration will be at the Heritage Welcome Center, 10499 Spring Street, White Springs, FL, from 8-10am.  Note this is NOT inside the Stephen Foster Cultural Center Park. From the registration area hikers will be ferried to the hike start point. End point is back at the Heritage Welcome Center. Hikers travel at their own pace.  There is minimal change in elevation.  The trail is well marked (blazed) and easy to follow.  Hikers are advised to wear comfortable close toed shoes, dress in layers, wear a hat, and apply sun screen and bug spray. It's also advisable to bring a bottle of water per hiker on the trip and a snack. The Ark before Noah   In his lecture, “The Ark before Noah,” British Museum expert Dr. Irving Finkel reveals how decoding the symbols on a 4,000 year old piece of clay enabled a radical new interpretation of the Noah's Ark story.  A world authority on the period, Dr. Finkel's real-life detective story began with a remarkable event at the British Museum: the arrival one day in 2008 of a single, modest-sized Babylonian cuneiform tablet brought in by a member of the public.  Such palm-sized clay rectangles were used by the Babylonians to create the first documents, and this particular tablet proved to be of quite extraordinary importance.  Not only does it date from about 1850 B.C., but it is a copy of the Babylonian Story of the Flood, a story from ancient Mesopotamia revealing, among other things, instructions for constructing a large boat.  Dr. Finkel will also describe the further series of discoveries which allowed him to decode the Flood story in ways which offer unanticipated revelations.  The lecture will also describe how a replica of the boat, following the ancient instructions, was built in India—the subject of the documentary film The Real Noah’s Ark.   The lecture will take place at the University of North Florida, Building 51, on Saturday, March 25, 2017. It will begin at 12:00 PM, and is free and open to the public.  Dr. Finkel will be giving a Norton Lecture, named for Charles Eliot Norton, the founder and first President of the Archaeological Institute of America and former Professor of the History of Art at Harvard University.  The Norton Lectureship is part of the AIA’s National Lecture Program.

Earth Day Environmental Challenge Weekend April 21-22 at Galimore Center April 22^nd is Earth Day, and once again Lincolnville’s Willie Galimore Center, 399 Riberia Street, will be the venue of an Environmental Challenge Weekend, providing educational and entertaining fun for the whole family. The two-day event will include a forum on Friday evening, followed by a March for Science and activities day on Saturday.  All events are free and open to the public.

The Archaeological Institute of America--Jacksonville Society will meet at noon on April 22, 2017 in Building 51 at the University of North Florida to hear a lecture by Dr. William Keegan, a professor of Caribbean archaeology with the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville.  The lecture is titled "Columbus and Cannibals in the Land of Cotton."  In the decade prior to the 500^th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s voyage there was a mad scramble to “discover” where Columbus made first landfall in the Americas.  Historians, geographers, geologists, navigators, computer specialists, journalists, and even archaeologists joined the hunt. Three locations still claim that honor. However, in the process of trying to solve this mystery, it became clear that virtually everything we thought we knew about Columbus was wrong.  This lecture focuses on archaeology's contributions to revealing the mysteries surrounding Columbus's voyages.  In the process Dr. Keegan will take the audience through lands of cotton and cannibals, and explore new research into production and exchange in the prehistoric Caribbean. The lecture is free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Archaeology Lab.  On Saturday, parking is free and the faculty /staff/vendor spaces are open to everyone. The Party of the Decades is set for Friday, April 28, 2017, from 6:30 p.m to 10:30 p.m, starting in the Roaring 20s, moving into the Groovy 60s and finishing in the Rockin’ 80s. The North Florida Women's Chorale will present a concert on April 30, Sunday, at 3 pm at Beaches Chapel Church, 410 Florida Av. Neptune Beach.  "Food for Body and Soul: A Musical Feast for the Ears" is the title of this sometimes playful, sometimes serious, concert about what nourishes us.  The Chorale will sing "If Music Be the Food of Love", "I Gave My Love and Apple", "Hot Chocolate", "That's Amore", and "Music Down in My Soul".   "Famine Song" is a reminder that many people in the world do not have enough to eat so the Chorale is asking the audience members to bring canned or boxed non-perishable food to the concert.  The chorale has collected more than 100 pounds of food to take to B.E.A.M, a food bank, during the rehearsal season.  The hour-long concert by the 35 voice chorale, directed by Kerry Fradley and accompanied by Kathleen Vande Berg, is free and open to the public.  Please remember to bring canned goods to the concert.  For more information visit www.womenschorale.org.

It is a race with a sweet reward; the Run for the Pies hosted by 1^st Place Sports. The run, which is on June 10 at The Jacksonville Landing, was started in 1979 and includes a Nike Championship Race and an Open 5K. All runners have the chance to win money, awards and pies. The entrance fee is $30 from June 1 through June 9 and $35 on the day of the race. Runners can register at  http://1stplacesports.com/races/pies/.   The Nike Championship Race is open only to those elite runners who have hit certain times in a 5K within the last year. For men, they must have run a 5K under 17 minutes and women will have had to run a 5K under 20 minutes. Nike running shoes will be given to each man who breaks 16:15 and each female who breaks 19:00. This race gets underway at 7 p.m. and the course is five loops, which makes it ideal for spectating.   The Open 5K is open to all runners and walkers, except those who participated in the Nike Championship Race. The run begins at 7:30 p.m. and all finishers will receive a custom designed medal. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each age group. Organizers will be handing out 200 pies to men who finish under 20 minutes and females who finish under 24 minutes, while the pies last. After the race, stick around for the block party, which begins at 8 p.m. and includes free beer for the runners and a pie eating contest. 1^st Place Sports will also be hosting a huge raffle with a chance to win prizes including running clothes, running shoes, bags, and more. Run for the Pies is a grand prix event. Sponsors include Nike, Tropical Smoothie Café, Moe’s Southwest Grille, Massage Envy, Montoya & Associates, Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute, Admira Dentistry, Orange Theory Fitness, Publix and WJXT.

THE SOCIETY OF MIXED MEDIA ARTISTS PRESENTS "WHO ARE YOU" AN EXHIBITION AT THE PONTE VEDRA CULTURAL CENTER   The public is invited to an exhibition presented by the Society of Mixed Media Artists (SoMMA).  The show will be in the Scene Gallery at the Ponte Vedra Cultural Center, located at 50 Executive Way, Ponte Vedra, FL, 32082, beginning on August 25, 2017.   This exciting exhibit is entitled "Who Are You” and will showcase pieces by many of the award winning members of the organization.  The title and theme of this exhibition might be misleading.  It will NOT be a show with self-portraits of the artists, but rather a display of pieces which challenged the artists to create works of art, (both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional and both abstract and representational),   that represent their personality, their likes or dislikes, their hobbies or maybe even a clue to their family ancestors.   An opening reception and awards presentation, which is open to the public, will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2017.  The exhibit will run through September 29, 2017.

The St. Augustine Art Association turns the tables on museum etiquette this month by inviting visitors to touch the artwork! The 16th Annual Tactile Art Show will be on display at 22 Marine Street, September 1 - October 1, 2017.  The exhibit of all touchable art includes sculptures, woodworks, mixed media, ceramics, fiber pieces and interactive art created by professional and emerging artists. The St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) will hold its annual College and Career Night Wednesday, September 6 from 5 - 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at St. Augustine High School located at 3205 Varella Avenue, St. Augustine. College and Career Night provides an excellent opportunity for St. Johns County high school students from both public and private schools to receive firsthand information on post-secondary educational opportunities. Representatives from over 75 colleges, universities, armed services, career institutes and trade schools will be available from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Families will find an increased presence of representatives with a focus on meeting their student’s diverse needs and expectations. The latest information on topics such as the college admissions process, college transition, scholarship and financial aid will also be available during information sessions from 5 – 7 p.m. While this event traditionally focuses on juniors and seniors, underclassmen are also encouraged to attend. THE SOCIETY OF MIXED MEDIA ARTISTS SEPTEMBER 16^TH MEETING AT THE CULTURAL CENTER AT PONTE VEDRA BEACH   The public is invited to attend the Society of Mixed Media Artists (SoMMA) meeting on September 16^th, at the Cultural Center AT Ponte Vedra Beach, located at 50 Executive Way, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, 32082.  The meeting will begin at 10:30.   The meeting will feature a presentation by abstract artist Princess Rashid.  Princess is a resident of Mandarin, but like many Jacksonville artists she has a studio in the CoRK district in Riverside.  In addition to being an abstract painter Princess is also a printmaker.  For her demonstration at the SoMMA meeting Princess will be showing her techniques in both mono-printing and collagraph—a type of collage printing. The Ponte Vedra Beach Branch Library is hosting its Teen Halloween Party and McGee Entertainment is providing a live D.J. for the party! The Status of the Summer Haven River with the Friends of the GTM Reserve Our annual meeting at the GTM NERR Visitor Center with the Friends of the GTM Reserve. Dr. Todd Osborne (Whitney Lab) and Dr. Nikki Dix (GTM NERR) will talk about the status of the Summer Haven River and its restoration. The Summer Haven River, at the southeast corner of St Johns County has been a river of environmental, historic, economic, and recreational benefits for many years. That was until 2008 when a tropical storm changed its landscape. In 2017 a re-development project began to restore the river's flow. The river is of special interest to St Johns County Audubon due to the large and active colonies of nesting imperiled birds which call the sand between the river and the Atlantic Ocean home for their offspring each summer before they leave the continent to migrate to South America. The entrance to the GTM NERR Visitor Center is just north of the Exxon Gas Station on A1A, which is approximately 7.5 miles north of the Vilano Bridge. Come early and enjoy the wonderful peace and quiet of the habitat around the Visitor Center and its fascinating exhibits.

We are dedicated to working with Captain Adam Morley to clean up the wading bird habitat and feeding grounds along the Intracoastal Waterway on the Litter Gitter. Trash bags and grabbers are provided, but please bring your own work gloves, bug spray, sunscreen, and (reusable) water bottle. We recommend rubber boots or water shoes, as we wade through shallow water to pick up along the spoil islands in the marshes. Join us on November 7 to hear from Carla Miller, Director, Jacksonville Ethics Commission Carla Miller is director of the Jacksonville Ethics Commission and the founder and president of City Ethics, an organization devoted to the establishment of local government ethics programs across the world. Carla is a former federal prosecutor in the Middle District of Florida where she handled political corruption cases, including the prosecution of the President Pro Tem of the Florida Senate. She has worked for over 20 years to build a strong ethics program in Jacksonville, Florida. She was Chair of the local Ethics Commission, helped to draft the City’s first ethics code, served as its first Ethics Officer (as a volunteer), fought for (and won) independence for the Ethics Commission; drafted a successful referendum to establish an Inspector General system; and handled thousands of calls on an ethics hotline. She has been the City’s Ethics Director since 2007.  From 2013-2015, Carla was a Network Fellow at the Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University where she developed ethics training programs for municipalities and participated in various research projects. The Archaeological Institute of America—Jacksonville Society will meet at noon on Nov. 17, 2018 in Building 51 at the University of North Florida to hear a lecture by Dr. Gregory Cook, a professor at the University of West Florida. His lecture is titled “Luna's Lost Ships: Updates on the Investigations of Three Vessels from the 1559 Colonization Fleet of Tristan de Luna"  This presentation will detail the finds and investigations of three shipwrecks in Pensacola Bay associated with the failed colonization attempt of Don Tristan de Luna in 1559.  These wreck sites are among the oldest in the United States, and along with the terrestrial settlement site located near the fleet, provide a rare look into Spanish colonization and life in the sixteenth century. The lecture is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served afterwards in the Archaeology Lab.  On Saturday parking is free and the staff/faculty/vendor spaces are open to everyone. Jenna Alexander Announces Community Art Project Opening Stripes and Buns, featuring 220 local women and girls, opens Thursday, December 6th ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida (October 24, 2018) – Local artist Jenna Alexander announces the unveiling of her latest art series, Stripes and Buns, with an opening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, December 6th at Gray 1908, home to Jenna Alexander Studio and Juniper Market at 73 San Marco Avenue in St. Augustine, Florida’s historic uptown neighborhood. “It started when I asked women in the community to come to my studio in their favorite striped shirt and bun on top of their head,” explained Jenna Alexander. “I love when people can connect over something as simple as a fashion trend or hairstyle and, clearly, others agreed. It took only 45 minutes to fill every time slot, and I photographed over 200 women and girls.” Inspired by a quote that hung in her childhood bathroom (“Here's to good women. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them”) and the current social climate, Alexander set out to capture strong females of the First Coast. Out of the more than 200 photographs, Alexander chose 30 to transform into oil paintings. Event to honor Universal Declaration of Human Rights 70^th Anniversary

A human rights event in St. Johns County will honor the 70^th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Residents from St. Johns, Flagler and Putnam Counties will join the international experience at The United Church (UCC – DOC), 5880 U.S. 1 south in St. Augustine, Dec. 10, 2018, 7:00PM. Readings of individual Human Rights by participants will be posted online by the United Nations. America’s key role in creating the Universal Declaration will set the stage for a community reading of the 30 Human Rights. St. Augustine’s contributions to human rights will be highlighted to an international audience. Participants will identify current violations of human rights in St. Johns, Flagler and Putnam Counties for future action. The event is sponsored by The United Church and Compassionate St. Augustine.

Chabad @ the Beaches presents the seventh annual women’s Jewish book club. Every month the club meets and discusses a new book.. The Cultural Center Announces JAME 2019 Exhibition Call to Artists for Annual Juried Exhibition Scheduled to Open this Month

 

1/2/2019 PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL: The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach (CCPVB), a local non-profit arts center and gallery space, has announced the dates for its popular annual exhibition, JAME. JAME (Juried Artist Member Exhibition) will begin January 18, 2019 with a free Opening Reception from 6pm - 8pm. The exhibition will then be opened to the public 10am - 4pm on Mondays - Saturdays through March 2, 2019. Visitors to CCPVB will be able to view a wide variety of local art as artists compete for the opportunity to exhibit and for cash prizes. Art work is also available for purchase during the exhibition. All Cultural Center Artist, Patron, and Renaissance Members are invited to submit work for JAME. This opportunity is open to all media, including 3D works of art. Previously known as Celebrate Art, JAME is an annual juried exhibition. Members can submit up to five works of art of any medium, and guest judge, Alicia Somers, will select pieces as well as assign prizes at the opening. New members are welcomed to participate. This is a perfect opportunity to show your work to the community, learn from other artists, and potentially win a prize! The first place winner will be awarded $300. The award winner will also be offered a solo exhibition in the Scene Gallery at the Cultural Center during the 2020 exhibition year. Second place will receive a prize of $125 and third place will receive a prize of $75. On January 19, 2019, Gordon Meggison will be demonstrating at the Society of Mixed Media Artists (SoMMA) meeting.  The meeting will begin at 10:30 at the Ponte Vedra Cultural Center, located at 50 Executive Way, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL  32082.  The public is invited to attend. Gordon describes himself as a citizen of the world.  He has traveled extensively and brings his experiences to his artwork both in abstract and natural subject matter.  His mural work is known locally, nationally and internationally.  Acrylics and watercolor are his favored media in works that have been in exhibitions around the world.  At the January meeting he will be demonstrating the use of acrylics combined with sculptural textured media to create a variety of techniques for abstraction.  It will be an informative and “not to be missed” demonstration.

The presence of a second right whale calf this winter off Ponte Vedra Beach on Sunday, Jan 13^th was a welcome sight for researchers.  North Atlantic right whales are highly endangered, with only 411 individuals left in the population.  There were zero calves born in 2018, and only 5 in 2017.  Their greatest threats are entanglements with fishing gear and collisions with vessels. Marine Resources Council (MRC) has been training and coordinating a dedicated volunteer sighting network of coastal residents, businesses, and beachgoers to identify and report right whale sightings off the coast of Florida since 1995.  MRC is seeking shore-based volunteers in northeast Florida to report whale sightings.  This will help protect them from collisions with vessels, initiate a disentanglement response (if necessary), help researchers gather photo-ID, genetic, and behavioral data; assist with tracking their migration and more. 5. V-shaped blow of water when they exhale

ST. AUGUSTINE COMMUNITY CHORUS TO PERFORM CARMINA BURANA FOR SEASON FINALE ST. AUGUSTINE, April 11, 2019 – The St. Augustine Community Chorus is ending their 70th Anniversary Season with a bang, singing one of the greatest pieces of music of the 20th century – the bold, strong Carmina Burana by Carl Orff, with the Bel Canto Singers of Daytona. The concert is being held as part of the Romanza Festivale of the Arts, and will take place on Saturday, May 11th at 4:00 pm at Kirk Auditorium (Florida School for the Deaf and Blind). The performance will be performed earlier on May 4th in Daytona, home to the Bel Canto Singers, at the Central Baptist Church. “This is a memorable and dramatic piece of music sung in Latin and German that many will recognize as key parts of this famous cantata have been used in movies, TV shows and commercials,” said Mike Sanflippo, Music Director for the St. Augustine Community Chorus. “We are pleased to be working with the Bel Canto Singers of Daytona for this first time to present this music with an enlarged chorus.” The Bel Canto Singers of Daytona are under the musical direction of Dr. David J. Redman. The program will begin with a selection by the Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, Adiemus, that is also recognizable from its use in TV ads, including for Delta Airlines. The St. Augustine Youth Chorus under the direction of Kerry Fradley, will also play a role in this concert: Carmina Burana calls for a children's chorus in two of the movements, and they will join the chorus in the final movement as well. They will also sing in Adiemus. The program will be accompanied by two pianists and six percussionists with a large battery of instruments including various drums and timpani, marimbas, and more. Carmina Burana was written by composer Carl Orff in 1935-1936 and once performed, he wanted his publishers to destroy everything he had previously composed (they didn’t) as he felt this was the true start of his career. The libretto was based on over 200 medieval songs and poems that Orff encountered in an 1847 edition of a book called Carmina Burana by Johann Andreas Schmeller, that had original text from monks dating from the 11th to 13th centuries. Local Jacksonville cancer survivor to perform original rap song at dinner featuring current and former NFL players and celebrities

 

The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation will host its 24^th annual Celebrity Golf Classic, in partnership with THE PLAYERS on May 19^th and 20^th. This premier event will take place at the world-renowned TPC Sawgrass in the company of Tom Coughlin and his celebrity friends from the sports world and beyond, as they gather to raise money for local Jacksonville families tackling childhood cancer.

The foundation is thrilled to announce a special addition to this year’s dinner. Eighteen-year-old cancer survivor Blake Herndon, will perform an original rap song inspired by his own cancer journey. Blake was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on his seventh birthday. Despite several relapses, Blake has always maintained a positive attitude and been an inspiration to all he meets.

“A Methodist bishop once quipped that no one can whistle a symphony. It takes an orchestra to play it,” said Jay Fund founder and Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tom Coughlin. “The same can be said of tackling childhood cancer. It takes a team, and we are so grateful to have so many incredible members of our team come out year after year to BE THERE for our Jacksonville families.”

KEEPERS OF THE COAST IS SEEKING PARTNERS FOR THEIR 10TH ANNUAL “DAY AFTER” BEACH CLEANUP ON JULY 5TH Nonprofit helps clean up St. Johns County beaches after the busy Fourth of July holiday ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA (June 17, 2019) – Keepers of the Coast (KOTC), a local non- profit dedicated to promoting coastal stewardship and the conservation of coastal habitat, are recruiting volunteers, sponsors, and adoptees for the 10th Annual “Day After” Beach Cleanup on Friday, July 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The purpose of the cleanup is to restore the coastline following the impacts of Fourth of July, traditionally one of the busiest beach days of the year. This community-wide effort will be held at several beach access points throughout St. Johns County. So far, KOTC has welcomed St. Augustine Ghost Krewe in adopting the Crescent Beachfront Park access point. Additional sites are currently available for adoption from local businesses, community organizations, and nonprofits: - Mickler’s Beachfront Park - Vilano Beachfront Park - St. John County Ocean and Fishing Pier (St. Augustine Beach) - A Street Beach Access Keepers of the Coast has successfully prevented over 600,000 (and counting!) cigarette butts from entering our oceans. Continue to keep the right butts on the beach by winning the cigarette butt challenge at the 10th Annual “Day After” Beach Cleanup. A prize package of sustainable Keepers of the Coast gear will be given to the participant who collects the most cigarette butts at each cleanup location. No pre-registration is required, and volunteers may show up at any of the locations. Beaches Freedom Festival to Honor Eight Hometown Heroes JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FL- This Saturday, July 13th at the Seawalk Pavilion, the Beaches Freedom Festival will recognize several outstanding military members and veterans who are doing great things in the community. The ceremony will take place during North Florida’s Most Patriotic Event on the main stage at 6:00pm. All of the honorees were nominated by peers, friends, or family members and have made and have significant accomplishments in the North Florida area. In addition, the festival will support and benefit eight different Veteran and community non profits. 2019 Freedom Festival Honorees: Sgt Nathan Bradley: Sgt Nathan Bradley enlisted in the USMC in 2010 out of Jacksonville, FL. During his time in the Marines, Sgt Bradley was deployed twice and attended several military schools. He first deployed to Afghanistan where he received a meritorious promotion and was awarded for actions taken against the enemy. Sgt Bradley also served several months in southeast Asia, and spent some time deployed to Okinawa, Japan. In 2014, Sgt Bradley left the Marines and attended the UNF, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business. It was during this time that he started working with veterans in the community, including co- founding a non-profit organization, Warfighters in Arms. Sgt Bradley took his love for helping veteran’s a step further when he accepted the position of Veteran Liaison & Community Outreach for 904 Happy Hour, where he is currently employed. In his position, Sgt Bradley now helps raise funds for other nonprofits, employ veterans, and recognize others who are doing great things in the community. He is currently serving with Marine Corps reserve unit in Florida. Sgt Fred Blaz: Fred Blaz served 6.5 years in the Marine Corps and got out as a Sgt. During his time in, he was stationed with 3/3 out of Hawaii where he did one tour to Afghanistan. Following his deployment, he served as a Marine Corps Embassy Security Guard at several duty stations around the globe. After getting out of the Marine Corps, Fred attended college at JU where he obtained a Bachelors of Business in Finance and is on his last semester of his MBA. While at JU Fred served as the VP of JU’s Student Veterans of America Chapter.

He currently serves as the Director of Public Relations for Vets4Vets of Northeast Florida, the Board of Directors for the Semper Fidelis Society, and is the Marine 4 Life Rep for Marine Corps League Nassau Detachment. He is also a member of the American Legion in Fernandina Beach and the VFW in Jax Beach

SSgt Rebecca Schilling: SSgt Rebecca Schilling is originally from Rochester, Minnesota and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2011. Following recruit training and MOS school, she was stationed at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island with the Parris Island Marine Band. She later became a Canvassing Recruiter with Recruiting Station Jacksonville in 2016. Through her time in the Marine Corps, SSgt Schilling has dedicated over 500 hours to volunteering with non-profit organizations such as: Toys for Tots, Warfighter’s in Arms, Operation Barnabas, and Jasper Animal Rescue Mission. SSgt plans to continue volunteering in the future as she moves on to Okinawa, Japan at the end of September. SSgt Justin Cabrera: SSgt Cabrera a native of Springfield, Massachusetts joined the United States Marine Corps in 2009. SSgt Cabrera began his career with 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. During his five-year tour there he completed a deployment to Africa in a bi-lateral effort to train and tighten relations with the Ghanaian Military. He then went on to deploy again with a Task Force that stemmed, based off the attacks on American Embassies in 2012. He transferred duty stations to Camp Pendleton, California to become an instructor at his Military Occupational Specialty School. At the conclusion of his tour, he returned to the operating force to deploy once again to Okinawa, Japan attached to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. In October of 2018, SSgt Cabrera transferred to Jacksonville, Florida where he is currently the Training Chief for the 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion Bravo Company. As a member of the active duty staff, he performs Marine Corps funeral honors in the North Florida and South Georgia area to support fallen veterans. SSgt Cabrera has also taken on the role as Toys for Tots coordinator for the Greater Jacksonville area. Last year, the Toys for Tots organization donated over 48,000 toys to 16,000 local children. LTC Laura Hart-Wickett: LTC. Wickett received her commission as a 2LT in the Women’s Army Corps, United States Army in 1976 and was assigned to the Military Police Branch. Throughout her honorable and trailblazing military career of 28 years, LTC. Wickett held many leadership roles within Military Police Branch, often being the 1st female officer assigned to a Command. After the 9/11 attacks, LTC Wickett was instrumental with creating and implementing new safety and security protocol for the Virginia and Georgia Army National Guard. Now retired, LTC. Wickett continues her personal commitment to selfless service as a member and Chaplain of the Women’s Army Corps Veterans Association Chapter 56 Jacksonville AND through her community service assisting the hurricane victims of the Florida Panhandle. MSgt Thompson: MSgt Bruce Thompson, United States Marine Corps retired, served 24 years on active duty working in the communication, logistics, and human resource management fields. Made multiple combat deployments. Awards include two meritorious service medals, 2 Navy & Marine Corps Commendation medals, 2 Navy & Marine Corps Achievement medals, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, among others awards. Since retiring in 2016, he has become the Executive Director of Vets4Vets of NEFL, a co-founder of Vets on T.A.P., co-chair of the Community Veterans Engagement Board of NEFL, and a member of multiple veteran non-profit boards. He has made it his priority to work with veterans, transitioning service members, and their families to improve on their quality of life, while working to ensure that veterans are not forgotten or ignored in the NEFL region. SSgt Wagner: Nathan Wagner served in the United States Air Force from 2008-2015 as a Cyber Systems Operator. While stationed at Keesler AFB in Mississippi for training, Nathan helped coordinate and lead the base Drum and Bugle Corps in various events to include: weekly retreat ceremonies, a Purple Heart ceremony, a Veterans Day Parade and various other shows and performances around the base. After PCSing to Holloman AFB in New Mexico, Nathan was direct communications support for the Predator and Reaper Remotely Piloted Aircraft training mission ensuring 100% uptime during critical training and support missions. Nathan was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was medically separated from Active duty after undergoing multiple foot surgeries at his final duty station. Currently Nathan is working as an administrator with the Clay County School District as a Technology Services Coordinator. While always wearing many hats, Nathan has recently been moved to the Cyber Security team within the School District and still actively gives his time as needed for any School District needs. SSG Jamal Hafiz: SSG Jamal joined the U.S. Army right after high school in 2003. Soon after, he deployed to Iraq in support of OIF as a truck driver running supply routes with the 942nd Transportation Company. After several years serving in different units, he decided to become an infantry man in the Florida Army National Guard as an Infantryman. He currently holds the rank of Staff Sergeant and has 16 years of service in the Army. Jamal is currently a SWAT team medic and Alachua County Sheriffs Office SWAT team. He is happily married to his wife Victoria. LORD OF LIFE LUTHERAN CHURCH TO HOLD ANNUAL PAPER SHREDDING EVENT FOR PONTE VEDRA Award-winning destruction company onsite with truck August 2, 2019, Ponte Vedra Beach – Local residents can get a head start on their Fall cleaning by tossing out their old sensitive papers at a community paper shredding event on August 17^th from 9 a.m. to noon. Local Ponte Vedra Beach church, Lord of Life Lutheran Church, will host its 2^nd annual shredding event in the parking lot of the church located at 276 Roscoe Blvd North. On hand will be the award-winning secure destruction company Iron Mountain with a truck.  Residents simply drive in; get help from church members unloading their papers into a bin and then watch the bin move up, be dumped inside the truck and see the shredding in action on a small computer monitor on the side of the truck. Done! “We held our first event last November and everyone who came that day commented on how useful this was and much needed,” said church council President Cindy Tanton. “We had a steady stream of cars coming in and people got a kick out of seeing the computer monitor to know that their papers were securely shredded.” With the threat of identity theft growing, paper shredding events are one way to securely get rid of outdated tax records, medical statements, utility bills, credit card statements, old passports, employment records and more. According to the public policy think tank Privacy and American Business, 1 in 5 Americans identify themselves as a victim of identity theft.[i] The church is asking for a $25 donation for this service per car/persons dropping off paper. The funds raised will go towards the church Building Campaign Fund and a local charity. The church has received its approvals locally to move forward with building a new sanctuary and the next step will be to survey the intended spot once more and then start on pouring the concrete foundation. Ponte Vedra Beach, FL: On September 8, 2019, La Florida: The Interactive Digital Archive of the Americas (www.laflorida.org) will launch two exciting initiatives related to the founding of St. Augustine, Florida. In this talk, Dr. J. Michael Francis will introduce the first phase of a long-term project to identify the men and women who joined Menéndez's 1565 expedition. To date, roughly 550 individuals have been recorded in the La Florida database, revealing fascinating patterns of regional diversity, a unique window into the lives of the Europeans and Africans who joined Menéndez's 1565 enterprise. This discussion will take place at the Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with a light reception beginning at 4:00 p.m. Tickets cost $20 for members and $30 for the general public and can be purchased online at ccpvb.org, by calling 904.280.0614, or by visiting the Cultural Center. SAVE THE DATE: Pie in the Sky will host their Peace in the Park event on International Day of Peace, Saturday, September 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Eddie Vickers Park, 399 Riberia Street, St. Augustine. This event is free and open to the public. Please bring a non-perishable food item for donation. The organization’s mission is to connect seniors with resources and facilitate long-term solutions that affect the lives of the elderly, the poor, the historically underserved, and the disenfranchised people of our community. Over the last 10 years, Pie in the Sky has helped thousands of people throughout St. Johns County. “When I started Pie in the Sky back in August of 2009, we were intent on ‘filling the cracks’ in services. Now, we have made fighting senior hunger our primary goal because no bigger abyss exists in our community,” explained Malea Guiriba, founder and executive director. “There are more than 6,000 seniors in our community who worry about where their next meal is coming from. It’s not about dropping the veggies off on the doorstep. It’s about filling the hunger of the heart through building relationships and letting them know that someone cares about them.” Currently, Pie in the Sky is feeding 465 seniors every month. Every two weeks, seniors receive purchased fresh produce and donated goods from KeHe and Waste Not Want Not. As of June 2019, Pie has already delivered 38,279 pounds of purchased fresh produce and 12,089 pounds of donated food this year. One hundred volunteers have worked 2,276 hours and driven 9,957 miles for deliveries. It only costs Pie in the Sky $262.50 to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to sponsor a senior for one year. Pets are a blessing in our lives for occupational therapy, search and rescue, as companions, family members and more. In fact, 68% of Americans households, or about 85 million families, own a pet! Cats and dogs are at the top of the pet list with approximately 94 million cats owned in this country and 89 million dogs. They are followed by birds, saltwater fish, small animals, reptiles and horses. On Sunday, October 6th, Lord of Life Lutheran Church at 276 Roscoe Blvd. N will hold its annual Blessing of the Animals at 9:45 a.m. This special service includes readings about animals, the Rainbow Bridge poem and each pet will come up with his or her owner to be blessed by Pastor Kerry Hinkley. The church will snap pictures of each pet blessing and text or email them to attendees. Following the service there will be treats for the pets – refreshments for the owners – and a giveaway to two pets! This day is in honor of Saint Francis, the Patron Saint of Animals, who died in October 1226. “Our Blessing of the Animals was very heart-warming last year and there was quite a lot of excited dog noises during the service which made everyone smile,” said Church Council President Cindy Tanton.

River-To-Sea Loop Public Workshop

St. Johns County is hosting a public workshop regarding the St. Johns River-To-Sea Loop multi-use trail from 5 to 7 p.m. on October 24 at the Solomon Calhoun Community Center, 1300 Duval Street, St. Augustine, FL 32084. Information on the preferred alignment  of the FDOT-funded project and associated planning study will be presented. PONTE VEDRA CONCERT HALL, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL: The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall (PVCH) and The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach (CCPVB) announce the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall Art Contest, a joint project between the two organizations, that will kick off this summer and will culminate with an awards party announcing contest winners on Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. The awards event is free and open to the public, there will be a cash bar. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served. Board member and Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee at PVCH, Michael Wicks, expressed that the main goal with this project is to, “...shine a spotlight on one of our communities’ greatest assets, the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. We couldn’t think of a better way than through the use of art, and through the eyes of our artist community. We are proud to partner with The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach for this special event.” The winner, selected by the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall Board and representatives from the St. Johns County Cultural Events Division, will be announced at the awards ceremony on September 6, 2019. The winning artwork will permanently hang at PVCH and the winning artist will be awarded with a $1,000 cash prize. The winner’s artwork will be used as official, promotional artwork for the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. The First Coast Blues Society, a non-profit affiliate of the Blues Foundation, is hosting a fundraiser from noon-6pm on Sunday, Nov. 10, at Mavi Waterfront Bar & Grill, 2309 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville Beach. The event will feature the three winners of the local blues challenge, who will be traveling to Memphis in January to compete in the International Blues Challenge. Timucuan Parks Foundation Healthy Living: Hike into History

Timucuan Parks Foundation and AARP invite the community to join them for Healthy Living: Fresh Air, Fitness, Friendship and Fun, a series of free monthly walks in parks and preserves on the First Coast. Healthy Living: Hike into History will take place on Thursday, Nov. 14 at Fort Caroline National Memorial. Participants should meet at the visitor center at 12713 Fort Caroline Rd. at 9 a.m. The morning will start with a ranger-led walk to the Timucuan hut where the ranger will discuss the cultural aspects of the Florida natives including the hunting methods, food, clothing and shelter. The group will then take a 1.2-mile hike on the LeMoyne Trail loop which will take people through the peaceful maritime hammock. Participants should wear comfortable shoes for the walk and bring a reusable water bottle. The event is free and Nature Valley granola bar snacks will be provided. Those interested are asked to register at timucuanparks.org/healthy-living.

Each Healthy Living adventure will begin at 9 a.m. and will last until 12 p.m. The series is designed to promote healthy living by teaching new ways to get fit and to show the therapeutic effects a walk in the park can provide. St. Augustine Orchestra Starts Christmas Music Season with ‘Happiest of Holidays’ Concerts St. Augustine, Fl – October 30, 2019 – The St. Augustine Orchestra (SAO) will kick off the city’s first holiday concerts of the season on Wednesday December 4th and Thursday December 5 th at the beautiful Lightner Museum. “There’s a lot of research about the positive effect both physically and psychologically of Christmas musici as well as how nostalgic it makes you feel,” said Artistic Director Scott Gregg. “That’s part of the reason we chose to call this performance ‘The Happiest of Holidays’. And since there is also data that people who decorate for Christmas earlier are generally happier, why not have the Christmas concerts start earlier in the month too, just after the Nights of Lights begins,” he added. The city’s namesake Orchestra will be presenting more than a dozen holiday classics, including the Nutcracker, Hugh Martin’s Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Mel Torme’s Christmas Song, to Bill Holcombe’s T’was the Night Before Christmas, the Frozen movie Concert Suite by Kristen Anderson- Lopez, and music from the movie Elf by John Debney. They will be accompanied by Lee Weaver, and by the St. Augustine High School Chorus. Ticket prices are $27.50 for adults 18 years and older; $12 for youths 11-17 and free for children 10 and under. The St. Augustine Community Chorus will hold its annual performances at the historic Cathedral Basilica, called ‘This Christmastide’, on December 14th at 7:30 pm and on the 15th at 2:00 pm. “Christmas is one holiday where people tend to plan well ahead of time what they want to do,” said Lynn Abjornson, President of the St. Augustine Community Chorus. “Last year our concert was sold out, so we encourage people to get their tickets early.” The performances are a big production with 100 adult singers, 35 singers that are part of The St. Augustine Youth Chorus (under the direction of Kerry Fradley), soloist Anna Eschbach, Shannon McKay, the principal organist at the Cathedral Basilica, and about 14 chamber players. “Creating a Christmas program usually presents fun challenges between needing classic familiar pieces mixed with others that evoke the feelings of the holiday season but may be new to the audience,” said Music Director Michael Sanflippo. This year the audience will hear John Rutter's Magnificat and Morten Lauridsen's ethereal O Magnum Mysterium, a piece that has quickly become a "new" classic since it premiered in 1994. AUGUSTINE, Florida (October 30, 2019) – Venardos Circus and its namesake ringmaster Kevin Venardos (veh-NARR-dos) will debut a new cast, show and music in a return to the St. Augustine Amphitheatre for a third seasonal stint beginning in December. There will be 32 shows over three weeks in the intimate red-and-white striped tent, set up in the Amphitheatre parking lot, from December 18, 2019 through January 5, 2020. With its unique jazz sound, the Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring consistently since, playing an average of 300 live dates a year all around the world. Glenn Miller Orchestra is a fully self-contained group consisting of the music director, five saxophone players, four trumpeters, four trombonists, three rhythm musicians (piano, bass, and drums), one male vocalist, and one female vocalist. The orchestra has performed in all 50 United States, as well as throughout Europe, Australia, Iceland, New Zealand, Guam, the Philippines, South America, and Central America. The SOUPer Bowl is January 30, 2020 from 6-8 at Nease High School in the cafeteria. The SOUPer Bowl event was first created in 2015 to address the issue of student hunger in St. Johns County. Over 9,000 students depend on the free and reduced lunch program at school, and often go hungry over the weekends or during long school breaks because they have no guaranteed source of nutrition. The SOUPer bowl aims to fill the gap by feeding these children. The event, hosted at Nease High School, features over 20 renowned local chefs presenting their signature soups for an unforgettable soup tasting event. Tickets are $25. Guests also get to choose a beautifully crafted ceramic bowl, made by a student as a memento from the event. So far, the SOUPer Bowl event has raised over $100,000 in 4 years to erase student hunger in St. Johns County. Help us as we partner with Huge Across the County to help students in need. All it takes to feed one student for one whole year is $250. The Russian State Symphony Orchestra ranks among the finest Russian symphony orchestras of the 21 st century. Under the direction of Conductor Valery Polyansky, their concerts mark strict performing discipline, flexibility of phrasing, rich and warm sound, nobility of expression, and skillfully balanced sound of orchestral groups. The Russian State Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1957 within the All-Union Broadcasting System. The orchestra was known as the State Symphony Capella of Russia, the organization that also included an internationally recognized choral entity – the State Capella of Russia. The merger of these two independently run music organizations was Maestro Polyansky. The orchestra also maintains a close creative unity between the orchestra and conductor. Past music directions of the orchestra include well-known conductors such as Samosud, Shostakovich, Rozhdestvensky, and Aranovich. Topic: "The Mangroves Are Coming" Lecture by Dr. Michael Shirley Have you noticed any strange-looking pods while walking on the beach lately? They could be mangrove propagules, seed-like advance troops for the northward march of these coastal trees more typical of south Florida. To learn more about what to expect as the warming climate brings these plants northward, attend the lecture by Dr. Michael Shirley at the Ribault Garden Club on February 20. The lecture will form the program at the monthly meeting of the Ribault Garden Club at the Ribault Clubhouse, 705 2nd Ave. N., Jacksonville Beach, on February 20. Guests are welcome to enjoy refreshments at 9:45 AM before the 10:00 AM meeting and lecture. This event is free and open to the public. There will also be a flower show with submissions by the membership. Dr. Shirley is the director of the Guana-Tolomato-Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve headquartered in northern St. Johns County. He also serves as regional administrator for Florida's East Coast Aquatic Preserve Program. He has been working in the field of coastal resource management for 38 years. Mangroves, bushy coastal trees that thrive in frost-free locations at the very edge of salt water, have been observed as far north as Vilano Beach. Because they anchor the land at the water's edge, they have been called protectors of the coast. However, although saltmarsh is typical along the intracoastal waterway and other salt and brackish locations in Duval County, mangroves are beginning to invade and replace the saltmarsh just a little farther south. This is because killing frosts have become rare in coastal Northwest Florida. The mangrove ecosystem is a valuable one, but if it replaces the saltmarsh, fishermen and homeowners will have to adjust to the change.

The music, considered to be one of Haydn’s most profound works, was first commissioned in 1786 by the Bishop of Cadiz, Spain to be played at the Cathedral of Cadiz during Lent.

Seven Last Words of Christ contains an introduction and seven slow movements that correspond to each of the last words of Christ. These seven sonatas showcase emotions that range from stark and painful to strength and acceptance. The end of the piece depicts the earthquake that supposedly occurred after Christ’s crucifixion. The words and artwork will be displayed on screen during the musical performance.

The concert is free and open to the public. Parking is free in the Christ Church garage or surface lot.

John Muir- A life of adventure and activism Sierra Club Program on Monday, April 6 at 6.00 p.m. John Muir- A life of adventure and activism We will present a video which depicts the full life and adventures of John Muir, a Scottish-American environmental activist, naturalist, author, and early advocate of preserving wilderness in the United States. John Muir was one of the founders of the Sierra Club in 1892. His writings and activism helped to preserve Yosemite and other national parks.
