The Ark before Noah   In his lecture, “The Ark before Noah,” British Museum expert Dr. Irving Finkel reveals how decoding the symbols on a 4,000 year old piece of clay enabled a radical new interpretation of the Noah's Ark story.  A world authority on the period, Dr. Finkel's real-life detective story began with a remarkable event at the British Museum: the arrival one day in 2008 of a single, modest-sized Babylonian cuneiform tablet brought in by a member of the public.  Such palm-sized clay rectangles were used by the Babylonians to create the first documents, and this particular tablet proved to be of quite extraordinary importance.  Not only does it date from about 1850 B.C., but it is a copy of the Babylonian Story of the Flood, a story from ancient Mesopotamia revealing, among other things, instructions for constructing a large boat.  Dr. Finkel will also describe the further series of discoveries which allowed him to decode the Flood story in ways which offer unanticipated revelations.  The lecture will also describe how a replica of the boat, following the ancient instructions, was built in India—the subject of the documentary film The Real Noah’s Ark.   The lecture will take place at the University of North Florida, Building 51, on Saturday, March 25, 2017. It will begin at 12:00 PM, and is free and open to the public.  Dr. Finkel will be giving a Norton Lecture, named for Charles Eliot Norton, the founder and first President of the Archaeological Institute of America and former Professor of the History of Art at Harvard University.  The Norton Lectureship is part of the AIA’s National Lecture Program.

The Archaeological Institute of America--Jacksonville Society will meet at noon on April 22, 2017 in Building 51 at the University of North Florida to hear a lecture by Dr. William Keegan, a professor of Caribbean archaeology with the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville.  The lecture is titled "Columbus and Cannibals in the Land of Cotton."  In the decade prior to the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s voyage there was a mad scramble to “discover” where Columbus made first landfall in the Americas.  Historians, geographers, geologists, navigators, computer specialists, journalists, and even archaeologists joined the hunt. Three locations still claim that honor. However, in the process of trying to solve this mystery, it became clear that virtually everything we thought we knew about Columbus was wrong.  This lecture focuses on archaeology's contributions to revealing the mysteries surrounding Columbus's voyages.  In the process Dr. Keegan will take the audience through lands of cotton and cannibals, and explore new research into production and exchange in the prehistoric Caribbean. The lecture is free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Archaeology Lab.  On Saturday, parking is free and the faculty /staff/vendor spaces are open to everyone. For more information, contact Melva Price at (904)241-9411 or aiajaxsoc@gmail.com

The St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) will hold its annual College and Career Night Wednesday, September 6 from 5 - 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at St. Augustine High School located at 3205 Varella Avenue, St. Augustine. College and Career Night provides an excellent opportunity for St. Johns County high school students from both public and private schools to receive firsthand information on post-secondary educational opportunities. Representatives from over 75 colleges, universities, armed services, career institutes and trade schools will be available from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Families will find an increased presence of representatives with a focus on meeting their student’s diverse needs and expectations. The latest information on topics such as the college admissions process, college transition, scholarship and financial aid will also be available during information sessions from 5 – 7 p.m. While this event traditionally focuses on juniors and seniors, underclassmen are also encouraged to attend. Many colleges have very selective admissions criteria and students should start planning early. “We are delighted to provide an opportunity for families to meet with post-secondary representatives from across the state and the nation without having to travel outside of our county,” said Denise Sumerix, director for Guidance and Programs of Choice. “I love seeing the excitement that this event creates for our students as they explore their many options and renew their focus on goals.” The event is presented by the SJCSD Department of Guidance and Programs of Choice. For more information, please contact your school’s guidance department, visit the website at www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/gpc/college/ or call Dana Chapman, Dept. of Guidance and Programs of Choice, at (904) 547-7754.

Peterbrooke Chocolatier Partners with Mason’s Voice in Fight Against Spina Bifida - Ten Percent of every transaction across participating Peterbrooke Chocolatier’s Jacksonville, Fla. Locations on November 10th will be donated to Mason’s Voice – JACKSONVILLE, Fla., October 26, 2018 – Peterbrooke Chocolatier (Peterbrooke), the premiere Florida-based confectioner transforming the art of fine European chocolate making into a truly American experience, announced today that it has joined forces with Mason’s Voice to build awareness and raise funds in the fight against spina bifida. On November 10, 2018, all participating Peterbrooke Jacksonville locations will donate 10 percent of each transaction to Mason’s Voice, the Jacksonville-based foundation committed to bringing awareness to spina bifida, specifically surrounding the in-utero diagnosis of the disease, which is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the United States. “There is no better way to give back and play a role in fighting this deadly disease than to indulge yourself, a friend, colleague or family member to an incredibly delicious chocolate treat from Peterbrooke Chocolatier,” said Jeff Smith, Peterbrooke Chocolatier’s chief operating officer. “This fundraising effort hits especially close to home as our Downtown Jacksonville Manager Linda Crout of more than ten years is the grandmother of Mason and knows all too well the devastating effects a spina bifida diagnosis can have on expecting parents and grandparents.” Peterbrooke’s traditional favorites such as decadent truffles, hand-made caramels, gelato and cherry cordials and specialties such as hand-dipped chocolate covered cookies, pretzels, scratch-made marshmallows, strawberries and the brand’s signature chocolate covered popcorn, among others, will all be available as part of the fundraising effort. Furthermore, Peterbrooke hopes to shed light on this serious and complex spinal cord birth defect that has an estimated prevalence of slightly over three cases per 10,000 births. “We are very pleased to join forces with a community partner such as Peterbrooke Chocolatier, “ said Louis Joseph, founder of Mason’s Voice and Mason’s father. “Through this type of commitment and partnership, we can work towards bridging the gap between the coordinated funding and research needed to enable better treatment options while empowering families and survivors. Furthermore, on this anniversary of our daughter Mason’s first fetal surgery, we’re gong to raise the funds needed to help send a struggling family to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the preeminent center for spina bifida fetal diagnosis and treatment across the country.” Jacksonville residents Louis and Baylee Joseph established Mason’s Voice in 2018 following the successful in utero spina bifida surgery on their daughter Mason performed by the team at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Since the financial and emotional burden can be overwhelming for families leaving their jobs and lives behind for immediate treatment in just a week’s notice, Mason’s Voice was founded to help alleviate the stress and ease the economic strain on families that have to embark on such a life-changing journey. Furthermore, Peterbrooke is partnering with Mason’s Voice to host an all-you-can-eat BBQ fundraiser at Bartram Park in Jacksonville, Fla. on Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $40 each and include two drinks, lots of BBQ and a silent auction. For more information and to purchase tickets to the event, please visit 904Tix.com. About Peterbrooke Chocolatier Founded in 1983 in Jacksonville, Fla., Peterbrooke Chocolatier is a “neighborhood chocolate shop” offering a wide selection of European-styled handmade chocolates through a distinctly American experience. The first shop opened in Jacksonville’s historic San Marco neighborhood and today the brand has more than 20 locations throughout the Southeast, including Florida, Alabama and Georgia. The brand began franchising in 2006 and continues to focus on high-quality, delicious and beautiful chocolate creations that are perfect for personal or corporate gifts, custom baskets, private parties, and more. Louis and I are so excited to Kickoff, our daughter, Mason’s fundraising platform. We are committed to bringing awareness to Spina Bifida, specifically surrounding the diagnosis in utero.

Jenna Alexander Announces Community Art Project Opening Stripes and Buns, featuring 220 local women and girls, opens Thursday, December 6th ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida (October 24, 2018) – Local artist Jenna Alexander announces the unveiling of her latest art series, Stripes and Buns, with an opening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, December 6th at Gray 1908, home to Jenna Alexander Studio and Juniper Market at 73 San Marco Avenue in St. Augustine, Florida’s historic uptown neighborhood. “It started when I asked women in the community to come to my studio in their favorite striped shirt and bun on top of their head,” explained Jenna Alexander. “I love when people can connect over something as simple as a fashion trend or hairstyle and, clearly, others agreed. It took only 45 minutes to fill every time slot, and I photographed over 200 women and girls.” Inspired by a quote that hung in her childhood bathroom (“Here's to good women. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them”) and the current social climate, Alexander set out to capture strong females of the First Coast. Out of the more than 200 photographs, Alexander chose 30 to transform into oil paintings. She’s also created a coffee table book for the series. “When each woman or girl came to my studio, I had them write in their own words the answer to the question: What do you think it means to be a good woman?” Alexander explains. “I took the paintings, photography, handwritten words, and gouache illustrations and put together a book that I hope will instill strength in future generations of strong women.” First edition, hardcover, and signed copies of Stripes and Buns: A Tribute To Good Women will be available ($65) for pre-order at jenna-alexander.com/product/stripesandbunsbook/ starting on November 15th as well as for sale at the opening of Jenna Alexander’s Stripes and Buns series on Thursday, December 6th. ABOUT JENNA ALEXANDER A St. Augustine, Florida based painter, photographer, and illustrator, Jenna Alexander describes her work as “simple, candid, airy, and beautiful.” Alexander’s previously released art series include Salt Run, Salt Run Silver, Naptime Botanicals, and the Even Me Project. When she’s not creating, Alexander spends time with her husband and two kids soaking up the Florida sun and hosting oyster roasts. ST. AUGUSTINE ORCHESTRA CONCERT FOCUSES ON OUTER SPACE IN TRIBUTE TO MOON LANDING The season finale concert of the St. Augustine Orchestra, “Out of this World”, will be a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 voyage to the moon with a selection of other-worldly tunes that highlight people’s long love affair with the universe. Just 114 miles south of St. Augustine in July of 1969, the rocket set off from Cape Canaveral and the world watched what seemed like an impossible feat to land on the moon. A few years earlier, in 1966, Star Trek debuted on TV, captivating people’s imagination of what could be ‘out there’. The St. Augustine Orchestra concert will include music from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Apollo 13, Wicked, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, ET the Extra-Terrestrial, Star Trek, Star Wars, and Debussy’s Clair delune. “We are excited to be performing such an enjoyable selection of music that will remind the audience of how frequently outer space has captured our imaginations,” said Maestro Scott Gregg. “We’re so lucky living here in St. Augustine that we can still see rockets after blast off and enjoy beautiful nighttime skies.” This concert is part of the Romanza Festivale of the Arts and will take place Friday, May 10th at 8:00 pm at the Lightner Museum. Tickets are $22.00 for adults over age 18; $12 for youth 11-17 years old; and free for youth 10 and under. Tickets are available for purchase at https://staugustineorchestra.ticketleap.com/season-finale/ and tickets may also be available for sale at the door if the concert isn’t sold out. The box office opens at 7:30 pm with general seating. The St. Augustine Orchestra is completing its 57th Season and was awarded Folio Magazine’s first ‘Best of St. Augustine’ Reader’s Poll as Best Large Band/Orchestra in the city. Community Celebration and Book Signing for “Northern Lights” by Cathy Parker

The community is invited to a celebration of the launch of the book “Northern Lights” by Cathy Parker. Come visit Bono’s Pit Bar-B-Q in Julington Creek on Tuesday, June 25 between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. for the party and book signing with Cathy. Bono’s is located at 100 Bartram Oaks Walk in St. Johns, Fla.

“Northern Lights” is the inspirational true story of how football helped to build bridges between cultures and transform communities. It tells the story of how our Florida community came together to help a high school football team 4,000 miles away in the Northernmost place in America. The movement started in 2006 after Cathy, a Bartram Trail High School coach’s wife and football mom, saw an ESPN feature on the team in Barrow, Alaska. She felt a calling to help the boys in the struggling community who were playing on a gravel field in the frozen tundra. With the help of the school system, churches, civic clubs, Bartram Head Football Coach Darrell Sutherland and many others, more than half a million dollars was raised in six months to build an artificial-turf stadium for the boys of Barrow.

Joining Parker at the event will be Honnie Korngold, the producer of the Northern Lights movie and Parker’s son, Kyle Parker, a former player with the Colorado Rockies and a former Clemson college football and baseball star. Evan Hall, a former Bartram Trail football player, will also be at the celebration. He was one of two Bartram Trail players chosen to fly to Alaska in 2007 for the first game on the new artificial-turf field.

More information about “Northern Lights” can be found at northernlightsbook.com.

Recognizing the need for continuing education for the young adults who graduate from high school; also acknowledging the high cost of education and some of the financial needs of our community, the Center for Spiritual Living (CSL) St Augustine established a scholarship fund in 2014 in the name of a young member, Venus Manly who was disabled with cerebral palsy and transitioned early in her young life. Also, CSL provides community support in the form of Back-to-school supplies for schools, Christmas gifts for youth and seniors, Easter baskets for seniors, regular donations to pantries, and ongoing community initiatives. CSL St. Augustine provides spiritual tools to transform our personal lives and help make the world a better place. We extend a warm welcome to all people in search of a spiritual community where they are embraced, affirmed and accepted for who they are, as well as inspired and supported to grow into their highest potential.

    Migrating Birds of North Florida

    Thursday September 19 – 6:30PM

Fall bird migration is upon us! Join Master Naturalist Gary Whiting and Expert Birder Cathy Murphy at Wild Birds Unlimited in Fruit Cove for a look at many common (and not so common) migrating bird species. Space will be limited to the first 45 responses. Email wbujacksonville@yahoo.com or call (904) 230-3242 to reserve your seat. Presentation will be at Wild Birds Unlimited, 450 State Rd 13 North, Suite 108, St Johns, FL 32259. That's next to Publix in the Julington Village Shopping Center.

VENARDOS CIRCUS Back at St. Augustine Amphitheatre, Debuts New Show December 2019-January 2020 ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida (October 30, 2019) – Venardos Circus and its namesake ringmaster Kevin Venardos (veh-NARR-dos) will debut a new cast, show and music in a return to the St. Augustine Amphitheatre for a third seasonal stint beginning in December. There will be 32 shows over three weeks in the intimate red-and-white striped tent, set up in the Amphitheatre parking lot, from December 18, 2019 through January 5, 2020. The traveling troupe of performers has had successful stints in the St. Augustine/Jacksonville market on three separate visits since January 2018, totaling more than 15,000 attendees over 55 shows, most of which have been sellouts. The upcoming shows are projected to be complete sellouts, including “Holiday Family Packs” for shows on Christmas Day, during Christmas week and on New Year’s Day. “St. Augustine is the perfect place to debut a new show and display how far we have come since St. Augustine was so responsive and launched our circus into a successful national touring group,” Venardos said. “At the outset, we called ourselves ‘The Little Circus That Could,’ and now we refer to ourselves as ‘the Little Circus That Can.’ The staff at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre has been so hospitable and we thank them and all of St. Johns County and the Jacksonville area for coming to our tent to enjoy these performances.” Tickets: General Admission tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for youth under age 12. Babes in arms are free with a paying adult (24 months and younger). Premium Reserved seating is priced from $35 to $45. Please visit www.Liveyourcircusdream.com Guests can expect to be transported back in time to the center ring of a centuries-old tradition, but one that has been reinvented for the next generation. With an amazing assortment of aerialists, acrobats, juggling, hand-balancing/contortion, comedy, daredevilry, magic, musical production and much more, with no animals, this amazing circus experience will truly delight adults and kids of all ages. Venardos Circus proudly features its own custom-made big-top, a classic red-and-white striped tent, with an intimate feel and limited seating. The circus performers also are the crew in this traveling tour who are completely self-contained, much like the original circus tradition. A new cast was recruited this fall and will make its debut in St. Augustine where attendees can park for free in the Amphitheatre parking lot and walk a short distance to the tent. An interactive pre-show party begins one hour before each show time with opportunities to meet the cast, snap selfies and play games. Classic circus treats like popcorn, nachos, fresh-made cotton candy and natural pink lemonade and more are available. The main event lasts approximately 90 minutes, with a brief intermission. Complete show schedule available at  ww.VenardosCircus.com.
